UEFA Champions League follow a league cum knock-out format where the group stages take place in a league form followed by three round of knockouts before the finals. the season starts with 32 clubs from the different leagues from Europe as part of it that are seeded into 8 groups, 4 teams in each group with no teams of same nation in one group. Each team in group stages plays a total of 6 matches in a double round-robin format and the winners and runners up qualify for the next round whereas the third-placed team qualifies for the Europa League round of 32.
The group stages are followed by a round of 16 which is played over two legs where the winner of one group faces the runners-up of the next one. The round of 16 winners then reaches the quarter-final stages which are again played over two legs, the fixture for which are decided on the basis of a draw and is followed by two-leg semi-finals and then the finals that are played on a pre-decided neutral venue.
The group stages run from September to December while the knockout stages take place in the month of February next year and the final takes place in the month of May or June when the league season has ended in most of the European nations.
