Ligue 1: Format
Ligue 1 follows a double round-robin format where each team plays a total of 38 games with each team playing the other twice. A win in each match gives the team 3 points, a draw gives 1 point and 0 points are awarded for a loss. The two teams that finish at the bottom of the table once the season ends get relegated to the Ligue 2 and the top two teams from Ligue 2 get promoted to Ligue 1.
The team that ends the season in 17th position in Ligue 1 plays a two-legged playoff against the 3rd placed team in Ligue 2 and the winner of that two-match gets to play in Ligue 1 next season whereas the loser goes to Ligue 2.
The top two teams in the league at the end of the season qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stages whereas the third-place team plays in the champions league qualifying stage. The fourth-placed team gets automatic qualification for UEFA Europa League whereas the winner of the domestic cup competition Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue also gets to take part in Europa League if the winners of both these competitions are already qualified for European competitions through league position, then the 5th and 6th placed team gets the nod for Europa League.
