Serie A is the topmost league of the Italian football system which is known for its tactical and defensive gameplay. It was launched in the year 1929 and since the 2010 season is being run by Lega Serie A.
Serie A: Format
Like most f the leagues, it follows a round-robin format where each team plays a total of 38 matches in a season. Each team players the other twice a season, once home and once away with the three teams that end up at the bottom of the table once the season ends are relegated to Serie B, and the team that is at number one position is crowned as champions.
The top 4 teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stages whereas the 5th placed team along with the Coppa Italia winner gets the nod in the UEFA Europa League group stages and the 6th or 7th placed club reaches the UEFA Conference League preliminary rounds.
Serie A: Teams
Serie A when launched started in the year 1929 had 18 teams as part of it. Over the years the number of clubs kept on changing as some seasons had 18 clubs participating and some had 16 clubs. But in 2004 it was decided that 20 teams will take part in a season and that has not changed since then.

Juventus is the most successful club with 36 titles followed by Inter Milan with 19. AC Milan who won their last title in the year 2010-11 is third with 18 titles.

Silvio Piola is the Serie A record goalscorer with 274 goals from 537 appearances followed by Francesco Totti with 250 strikes from 619 matches. Gunnar Nordahl with 225 goals is the all-time Serie A top scorer who is non-Italian and has the highest goal/match ratio that stands at 0.77.
