In the year 1928 Real Federación Española de Fútbol laid the foundation for the formation of La Liga which was launched in the year 1929 with 10 teams. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Getxo, and Real Unión were all selected for the opening La Liga as previous winners of the Copa del Rey. whereas Atlético Madrid, Espanyol, and Europa qualified as Copa del Rey runners-up. Racing de Santander was the last of the 10 teams of the inaugural season.
La Liga has seen the rivalry between two of the best player that football has ever seen, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi that divided the world in following Real Madrid and Barcelona, with the matches between both the team popularly known as El Classico being one of the most-watched game.
La Liga: Format
La Liga like most of the leagues around the world follows a double round-robin format with the bottom three teams on the points table getting relegated to Segunda División and the team that is at the number one position being crowned as champion. The league consists of 20 teams that play each other twice, once home and once away playing 38 matches in total. The team gets 3 points for winning the match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
In general, the top 4 teams in the league at the end of the season qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stages with the 5th placed team qualifying for Europa League along with Copa del Ray winner and 7th placed team going to UEFA Conference League.

La Liga when launched in 1929 started with 10 clubs, with the latest 20 team format introduced in the year 1997. In the club 91 year history, Real Madrid and Barcelona who was the first-ever winner have won a combined 60 titles between them. Madrid has won the league 34 times and finished as runners-up 24 times, followed by Barcelona with 26 La Liga titles, Athletico Madrid who has 11 titles to their name. Apart from these three teams, six more teams have won the La Liga crown namely; Athletic Bilbao (8), Valencia (6), Real Sociedad (2), Deportivo La Coruña (1), Sevilla (1) and Real Betis (1).

Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Bilbao are the only teams that have never been relegated from La Liga since its interception. Barcelona holds the record for most consecutive games without a loss which went for 43 games from 8 April 2017 to 13 May 2018. The record for most consecutive unbeaten home games goes to Real Madrid, 121 matches (17 February 1957 to 7 March 1965) whereas Barcelona holds the record for most unbeaten away games, (23 matches 14 February 2010 to 30 April 2011)
